WE NEED YASUNI'S MONEY... ¿IS THAT WHAT YOU THINK?
Following
are several ARGUMENTS of the people who got stuck in the times of the “oil
boom” and express their apathy by believing that “what belongs to all of us,
belongs to no one”, together with some ANSWERS.
As Patricio
Chavez from Oilwatch and Fundación Amazonía por la Vida (Amazon
for Life Foundation) says "There are people that you will not convince;
it's like what happens in the US with people that agree with unrestricted
weapon sales despite the fact that there are so many crazy people freely
killing children in their own schools (sorry for using such a rough
example)."
Patricio Chavez, Oilwatch.org:
1. ARGUMENT:
We need that money.
RESPONSE:
Oil will run out very soon, in 20 or 25 years. We will run out of money and life
in Yasuní will end.
2. ARGUMENT:
Even you drive a car.
RESPONSE:
Just like everyone else, the problem is what it's used for; to go a block away,
to buy bread. It's not the same if you use it to take your family to school,
work, etc.
3. ARGUMENT:
It's far away.
RESPONSE:
It's not worth wasting time trying to answer these questions. …
4. ARGUMENT:
There are too many bugs.
RESPONSE:
…same again.
5. ARGUMENT:
It's already being exploited anyway.
RESPONSE:
If you have a relative suffering from a terminal disease, you let them die, you
end their suffering or do you do everything in your power to keep them alive?
Your attitude shouldn't be any different with nature. Until the 1950s Waoranis
had no knowledge of our type of civilization, it was Evangelical missionaries
who contacted them and there are the consequences. Do we want the same fate for
the Tagaeris and Taromenanes? Then let's not ask for money. Let's save it for
the sake of preservation. So that future generations can also enjoy it. In
fact, this should have always been the proposal; that's how it began.
6. ARGUMENT:
So that Peruvians can take it away…
RESPONSE:
There is no technology by which oil can be extracted through horizontal wells
at distances of over 5 kilometers and ITT's oilfields are at much
greater distances than that from the Peruvian border.
Lourdes Hernandez,
Yasuní 21x24 Challenge
1. ARGUMENT: We need that money...
RESPONSE:
Not a single penny will reach your pocket. All the money is for the government and
the profits go to Chinese oil tycoons.
2. ARGUMENT:
Even you drive a car.
RESPONSE:
Let's use fewer cars. Run! Ride a bike... Let's change our life style. I prefer
fresh air over oil any day.
3. ARGUMENT:
It's so far away.
RESPONSE:
It's so far away that soon enough your tap will start dripping contaminated
water or no water at all. When a butterfly flaps its wings in one part of the
world it can cause a hurricane in another part of the world
4. ARGUMENT:
There are too many bugs.
RESPONSE:
When you're there, you want to see the “bugs”. The most amazing part is that
you have to be absolutely silent in order for them to appear. You respect them
and wait for them patiently. Flies and cockroaches reign where the jungle has
been ravished. The imbalance is overwhelming. That's when plagues of vermin
arrive.
5. ARGUMENT:
It's already being exploited anyway.
RESPONSE:
It's true. That's so disrespectful. Everyday monkeys are hunted by villagers in
order to be sold illegally. So are also macaws, felines, parrots and orchids.
Each day settlers arrive and take over what is ours. Everyday platforms, trucks
and dumpers come in through paths approved by the government. Don't you think
that's a good reason to protest about?
6. ARGUMENT:
So that Peruvians can take it away…
RESPONSE:
Their forest is just as sacred. It's the Amazon Rain Forest. Let's
hope they protect it.
Santiago Cobo, Ecuadorian citizen.
1. ARGUMENT:
We need that money.
RESPONSE:
Your grandchildren will need the jungle more than they need money that they
will never give you. The loss of one of the world's last virgin rain forests
can not be measured with money.
2. ARGUMENT:
Even you drive a car.
RESPONSE:
I use it less and less.
3. ARGUMENT:
It's so far way..
RESPONSE: Idiot.
4. ARGUMENT: There
are too many bugs.
RESPONSE: Idiot.
5. ARGUMENT:
It's already being exploited anyway.
RESPONSE:
That's true. There's no bigger power than money, paid in cash and already spent.
Go and see it for yourself before it's over.
6. ARGUMENT:
So that Peruvians can take it away…
RESPONSE:
Americans and the Chinese are who take it away, not Peruvians.
DEFEND YASUNÍ. THERE ARE NO REASONS TO ACT OTHERWISE.
